We are pleased to announce the publication of Asian Perspective, volume 49, number 2 (Spring 2025), published by Johns Hopkins University Press for the Institute for Far Eastern Studies of Kyungnam University and made available online at Project Muse (https://muse.jhu.edu/issue/54927/print).
This issue contains the Special Issue on Great Power Competition in the Indo-Pacific and Eurasia – Part 2. In the second part of this special issue—which advances a comparative typology that encompasses the dynamics of great power competition across different ideal types of states and quasi-states to include small states, associated states, contested states, and territorial autonomies—the focus turns to Eurasia, with four case studies exploring the experiences of Turkmenistan (small state), Bhutan (associated state), Nagorno-Karabakh (contested state), and Gaguazia (territorial autonomy).
In addition to the special issue articles, the publication includes explorations on various other international, regional, and geopolitical issues: the interests, expectations, challenges, and benefits of relevant actors (Eurasia, Russia, India, and China) in the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC); the relationship between citizens’ redistribution attitudes and trust in government in Asian countries; and the narratives on China that have emerged from South Korean elites, masses, and scholars since the ROK-PRC normalization of relations in 1992. Our book symposium features discussion on Andreas Fulda’s book, Germany and China: How Entanglement Undermines Freedom, Prosperity and Security (Bloomsbury, 2024).
All back issues of the journal (from 1977 to 2025), including past special issues, are also available at Project Muse (https://muse.jhu.edu/journal/733).
