On May 14, 2021, the Institute for Far Eastern Studies (IFES) of Kyungnam University held a strategic online discussion forum jointly with the Institute for Korean Studies and the East Asia National Resource Center of the George Washington University on the theme of “Biden's North Korea Policy and U.S.-ROK Relations.”

The virtual event featured three panel discussions that covered ROK-US relations, DPRK-US relations, and inter-Korea relations, plus a roundtable Q&A.

During his opening remarks, IFES director Kwan-Sei Lee said that with the completion of the US administration’s review of North Korea policy and with US-North Korea contact beginning, the ROK-US summit scheduled for May 21 will be an important opportunity to gauge whether the journey for peace on the Korean Peninsula can begin again. He predicted that the summit “will be an opportunity to explore practical policies toward North Korea that South Korea, North Korea, and the United States can relate to, as well as various measures for the development of ROK-US relations.”
