Asian Perspective: Latest Issue
We are pleased to announce the publication of Asian Perspective, volume 48, number 2 (Spring 2024), published by Johns Hopkins University Press for the Institute for Far Eastern Studies of Kyungnam University and made available online at Project Muse (https://muse.jhu.edu/issue/52594).
Building upon part one of our Special Session on Infrastructure Connectivity in Europe with Chinese Characteristics, in part two of this session, several research articles examine the establishment of formal economic cooperation between China and 16 Central and Eastern European (CEE) economies since 2012, in which the role of Chinese investment in this region has become increasingly scrutinized. In general, the analysis focuses on the impact of Chinese foreign direct investment in Belt & Road projects, including agricultural, energy, and transportation infrastructure, among others, that contribute to trade flows within the European market.
Beyond the special session articles, the issue also includes insightful research on health security governance in South Korea, explaining Seoul’s successful policy response to the COVID-19 pandemic and illustrating how Korea’s post-MERS digital biosurveillance can serve as a new model of biocitizenship; Vietnam’s reception of Chinese soft power initiatives; China’s rather surprising participation in UN peacekeeping operations in Haiti, considering that Port-au-Prince recognizes Taiwanese sovereignty; and the Baltic States’ relations with China and Taiwan, with a focus on explicating Lithuania’s divergent policy toward China from the theoretical perspectives of alliance politics, economic relations, and national identity.
