Title 2021 Academic Exchange Support Program for North Korean and Unification Studies - Scholarship Program

I. Overview  
Background and Overview
The “Academic Exchange Support Program for North Korean and Unification Studies” is designed to expand the base of experts on peace and unification of the Korean Peninsula as well as North Korean studies in the international community.
As part of this academic exchange program, we are calling for scholarship/fellowship applications from rising scholars who wish to pursue a master’s degree or doctorate in North Korean and unification studies.
II. Scholarship Program
MOU-UNKS North Korean Studies Scholarship
The “MOU-UNKS North Korean Studies Scholarship” is designed to support rising scholars interested in pursuing a master’s degree or doctorate in North Korean and unification studies.
Scholarships will be provided to applicants of the master’s degree or doctorate in North Korean and unification studies at the University of North Korean Studies. Successful applicants to the doctoral program can receive a scholarship for up to three years.
1. Applicant Eligibility
  • Foreign nationals under the age of 40 who apply to enter a master’s or doctoral program on studies of North Korea and Korean unification.
  • Academic requirements: All applicants must have maintained the overall final cumulative GPA equivalent to or higher than any ONE of the following from their highest level of education (Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree)
- 2.64 on a 4.0 scale;
- 2.80 on a 4.3 scale;
- 2.91 on a 4.5 scale;
- 3.23 on a 5.0 scale; or
- Score percentile: 80% or above on a 100 point scale
  • - If an applicant holds a transcript that does not include information on grade point average or is unable to convert his or her grades into any one of the GPA criteria mentioned above, then the applicant must submit an official document issued by the applicant’s university describing the university’s grade system.
  • Favorable consideration will be given to applicants with Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) level 5 (or above) and those who apply to the doctoral program.
2. Grant Period
  • - Up to 2 years for Master’s Degree applicants (renewed annually)
  • - Up to 3 years for Doctor’s Degree applicants (renewed annually)
  • - The initial grant will be provided for one year with annual review and renewal process. Minimum 80% of cumulative GPA or better is required for renewal.
  • - Applications for 2021 will be open to freshmen able to start on March 1, 2021.
  • - Recipient of the scholarship grant should enter the Republic of Korea at least 15 days prior to the start of the program.
  • - In accordance with the Infectious Control and Prevention Act, all incoming foreigners, regardless of nationality, shall be subject to mandatory 14-day quarantine beginning on the date of entry.

3. Grant Amount
  • Tuition (total amount)
  • Living expenses (KRW 2,000,000/month)
  • Round-trip flight ticket (expense reimbursement)
  • Medical insurance coverage
  • Settling-in allowance (KRW 700,000)

Those who have received scholarships/grants with the same research topic in the past and those who are currently receiving other types of scholarship/grant from other institutions of the Republic of Korea are ineligible for this program.

  • Reminders
  • - Beneficiaries are expected full commitment to their studies, and shall not seek employment in any manner
  • - The beneficiary of this program should stay in the Republic of Korea during the semester/fellowship period.
  • - Beneficiaries who wish to terminate their participation in the program will be required to return the scholarship/grant received.
  • - All personal information provided by applicants will only be used for this program. All applicants should consent to the collection and use of his/her personal information submitted in the application to commence the process.
※ The program will proceed after the final selection is made and once the contract is settled.

  • - Regarding required documents except IFES Forms, only scanned files (in PDF format) are valid. Image files will not be counted toward the application. (Please do not upload pictures taken with your cell phone.)
  • - The application form and all required documents must be submitted in English or Korean. If documents are submitted in other languages, please submit both the original file and a verbatim translation.
  • - Please submit the application form (ONE Word file) and other required documents (ONE PDF file) via email. You should submit 1 Word file and 1 PDF file.
