Title Accepting Applications for the 9th "IFES Academy of Korean Unification Economy"
Date 2020.02.05
Type [Event]
○ Invitation
“The key front in the offensive for frontal breakthrough today is the economic front.” At the end of last year, North Korea presented its “frontal breakthrough” strategy for economic construction at the 5th Plenary Meeting of the 7th Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea. Accordingly, North Korea has been focusing on reenergizing its national economy as a whole since the beginning of this year. Meanwhile, the South Korean government’s willingness to encourage progress in inter-Korean relations through individual tourism in North Korea within the framework of sanctions seems stronger than ever, and it is also actively searching for ways to promote inter-Korean cooperation to contribute to denuclearization. The situation both at home and abroad has not been easy this year, but both Koreas are once again dreaming of new change and moving forward through economic cooperation. In response to these trends, Kyungnam University's Institute for Far Eastern Studies (IFES) will launch the 9th IFES Academy of Korean Unification Economy beginning on February 20th in order to study topics such as the prospects of North Korea’s economic development strategy and tourism and the South Korean government’s plan for inter-Korean exchange and cooperation, among others.
In 1999, the institute launched the “Academy of Inter-Korean Economic Cooperation,” the first program to train experts on the subject, and throughout the years had over 2,000 participants complete the program. Since 2014, the institute has been operating the successor program of the “Academy of Inter-Korean Economic Cooperation,” the “IFES Academy of Korean Unification Economy.” The Academy of Korean Unification Economy’s educational programs are consistently upgraded, and the Academy invites the most renowned experts on North Korea to use their knowledge and understanding as a basis to search for practical measures to enter the North Korean economy. With eight successful sessions and hundreds of graduates so far, the “IFES Academy of Korean Unification Economy” not only focuses on inter-Korean economic cooperation, but is also laying the groundwork for a new era of Northeast Asian economic cooperation and peace by preparing a high quality program that has received massive support from previous participants.
During this session, former and current Ministers of Unification, Chinese and Russian scholars, high-ranking North Korean defectors, and leading experts from various fields will be invited to give lectures on a wide range of topics, sharing fresh and interesting ideas not easily heard elsewhere. The subjects covered in this session include those that should be given special attention this year, such as North Korea’s strategy for economic development outlined at the 5th Plenary Meeting of the 7th Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, tourism, construction, science and technology, and the construction of infrastructure near the North Korea-China border, as well as recent market and business activities within North Korea. We look forward to the active participation of all those interested in paving the way for a peaceful and prosperous future on the Korean Peninsula, including adventurous entrepreneurs, public workers, judicial officers, and members of social organizations.
