       Keynote Speech by Minister of Unification Kim Yeon-chul

International Conference "Urban North Korea: Changes and Exchanges" was held on June 19, 2019. Minister of Unification Kim Yeon-chul delivered his keynote speech expressing "great expectations for urban exchanges between North and South through enhanced understanding of North Korean cities." He also expressed that these activities will serve as "priming water that will expand the exchanges between regional and local governments and bring peace on the Korean Peninsula a bit closer."

Welcoming remarks were delivered by IFES Director Lee Kwan-sei and Friedrich Naumann Foundation For Freedom Head of Korea Office Christian Taaks. Notable presentations were given by Eunlee Joung on expansion and changes in the North Korean real estate markets in recent years with a focus on North Korean factories and enterprises and Doojin Hwang, Director of Doojin Hwang Architects and chairman of Inter-Korean Exchanges Committee of Korean Institute of Architects who argued that the Kaesong Industrial Complex (KIC) was not a simple industrial park construction but designed as a new city and when KIC is resumed, it needs to transform into a new industrial city of the 21st century. 

This conference was a great success with over 200 people in the audience consisting of North Korea researchers and related government and corporate personnel and practitioners.
